Gran Canaria Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria—a paradise for family vacations and a hidden gem for wildlife photographers. My family and I had the privilege of visiting this island in late June and early July, and I’d like to share our experiences with you.

First Stop: Puerto Rico – A View from the Cliffs

Our first destination was Puerto Rico, a charming coastal town that immediately captivated us with its relaxed atmosphere. The beaches, bordered by rocky cliffs and coves, were teeming with small crabs—a delightful discovery for our daughter. For me, as a wildlife photographer, these creatures offered fascinating subjects, and I captured some stunning close-ups. Larger red crabs at the harbor rocks provided a striking contrast against the azure sea.

The cliffs of Puerto Rico were another highlight. Our hotel, perched on the cliffside, offered breathtaking views of the ocean, with sunsets that painted the sky in mesmerizing colors every evening. Watching the sun dip into the sea became a cherished ritual.

One unforgettable experience was a dolphin-watching tour. We were fortunate to encounter several pods of dolphins gracefully slicing through the waves around our boat. Witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was a moving moment for all of us, especially our little one.

In the hills surrounding Puerto Rico, we spotted numerous Gran Canaria giant lizards (Gallotia stehlini) in the afternoons. These endemic lizards are notable for their impressive size, with males boasting large, robust heads. I couldn’t resist photographing these creatures basking in the sun or nibbling on flowers, their favorite snack.

Second Stop: Maspalomas – Stunning Dunes and Lizards

Next, we traveled to Maspalomas, renowned for its sprawling sand dunes that evoke the nearby Sahara. This extraordinary landscape stretches for miles in the island's south, providing a unique backdrop for exploration.

In the vegetated areas of the dunes, I encountered more Gallotia stehlini. The afternoons proved to be the best time for photography, as the lizards were most active. However, the scorching heat of the sand made it essential to find shade and stay hydrated. Nearly every bush concealed a territorial male lizard fiercely defending its spot. I even witnessed a mating—a rare and remarkable sight.

These lizards are surprisingly tame, allowing photographers to approach within a few meters if they move slowly. Still, their rapid movements and natural camouflage made capturing good shots a challenge, requiring patience and sharp observation.

While exploring the dunes, I ensured I respected the privacy of the local LGBTQ+ community, which is particularly active in the area. However, my use of a telephoto lens drew a complaint, prompting me to leave. It was disappointing that tolerance didn’t seem to go both ways.

A Perfect Blend of Family Time and Nature Adventures

Our journey to Gran Canaria offered the ideal combination of exciting nature experiences and precious family moments. The island’s consistently pleasant climate allowed us to make the most of each day. From dramatic cliffs and stunning coastlines to the expansive dunes, the diverse landscapes provided endless opportunities to connect with nature and create lasting family memories.

Gran Canaria left a profound impression on me with its beauty and variety. It’s a true haven for nature enthusiasts and the perfect destination for a relaxing family vacation. What could be better than combining both?
